Meta Audience Insights
Meta Audience Insights is a retired standalone name; Meta now directs businesses to audience data in Meta Business Suite Insights. The current experience summarizes available demographic and geographic information about people who follow or view content on connected Facebook and Instagram accounts, alongside content and account performance. It is useful for directional audience research and reporting, but it should not be treated as a precise market census or a replacement for campaign-level testing.
What it does
Meta Audience Insights is a research tool inside Meta Ads Manager that reveals demographic, behavioral, and interest data about people on Facebook and Instagram. Given a custom audience (a customer list, pixel-based audience, or Page fans) or a defined interest and demographic target, it shows the audience's age and gender distribution, top job titles, education level, relationship status, geographic concentration, device usage, and the Facebook pages they like most. This last data point — 'pages liked' — is particularly useful for finding affinity audiences and interest targets you may not have considered. The tool has been scaled back since its earlier version and now primarily surfaces data on page fans and custom audiences rather than the full Facebook user base.
Where it fits
Audience Insights is a research tool used at the campaign planning stage — before building ad sets — to inform targeting strategy and identify interest expansion opportunities.
Core features
- Demographic breakdown of custom audiences or interest-based audiences
- Pages liked by the audience — useful for discovering interest targets
- Geographic distribution and top cities for defined audiences
- Device and platform usage patterns
- Comparison between an audience and the general Facebook population
- Ability to save audience segments directly to Ads Manager
Best for
- Campaign planners researching audience composition before building targeting sets
- Advertisers looking for interest affinities beyond the obvious category targets for their product
- Teams building lookalike audiences who want to understand the composition of their seed audience before creating a lookalike
Beginner notes
- The tool requires an audience of at least 1,000 people to show data; smaller custom audiences will return limited or no results.
- The 'pages liked' section reflects what the audience engages with on Facebook, not necessarily their purchasing behavior — use it as a signal, not a direct proxy for purchase intent.
- With Meta's data privacy changes over 2021-2023, granular interest data is less detailed than it was; supplement Audience Insights research with third-party survey data or your own first-party customer data.
